Final Project Analysis?

So here’s my little explanation of my final project.
What originally was meant to be a video emphasizing the skateboarding culture in Fredericksburg, turned into a skate video. It was supposed to be my introduction back into skateboarding. While that is exactly what it was, it simply turned into a full on skate segment. I took about four filming sessions to get all of the footage along with a ton of practice in the beginning to get a hang of everything again.
Let me just start out by saying when I first hopped on the board, I was INCREDIBLY rusty, so what I made shows a BIG improvement on my part.
I had over an hour of footage after i finished filming. How did i condense this into a little over 2 minutes you ask? Well I had so many falls and fails in the footage that I could make a video that would almost take up all of class time. The hardest part was organizing all of the footage into a way that i could go through, edit, and place tricks into the video. Upon picking each scene that would make up the video I already had an idea of the song I wanted… mostly because I had been listening to it on repeat while skating.
I imported the song into FCP7 and then placed the footage in afterwards. It involved a lot of cutting to try to make the scenes as short as possible to keep the video interesting. I tried to organize the scenes to match the flow of the song. I then made a series of cool cuts and transition to match the songs beat as well. I tried to make it so each trick was popped and landed in conjunction with the beat of the song as well.
I then decided i needed a cover for my skate video. Why is it called “Deep-Fried Twinkies”? Because they are delicious. There’s this badass place that I go to up in alexandria, va (my hometown) where you can get the place to deep fry whatever you want. Ya gotta have the hook up though.

Info on the GIF here

I then used the intro from a Mac Miller song (Kicking Incredibly Dope Shit) and did some editing in audacity to match my needs. Please don’t listen to the song and and assume this is my kind of music, I hate Mac Miller.

With the song i had to mash together the choruses in the song to shorten the length. I think I did a pretty good job on that though because it’s hardly noticeable.

So how is this Storytelling?
Through this video I am sharing my progression in skateboarding over less than a months time. I’m sharing my story in a compelling format in which I incorporated visual, design, video, and audio tools to tell my story.

Final Project: Deep Fried Twinkies Skate Video

So here’s my final project. I got bored and decided to finish up all the editing and stuff today. Plus I didn’t really feel like filming anymore.

I’ll have another post later on describing my process including the GIF I made, the editing process, troubles with audio, and the several injuries I’ve obtained.

Deep Fried Twinkies Digital Cover

I found this image on CC in Flickr.
I used photoshop to blue our most of the image and I experimented with some lighting effects to try to create the whole neon sign kinda feel. Just trying to do some busy work to keep me from the KM and seminar papers.

Tupac?

Thank you Jim Groom for the inspiration last class.

Tupac is now a character in Star Wars.

Deep-Fried Twinkies Teaser

So here’s a little teaser of the work I’ve been doing on my final project. I got a lot of footage and I definitely need to get more over the weekend when I go home to visit my mom (who just had knee replacement surgery, she’s a tough cookie.) Anyways, heres a sample of my work.

DS106 Radio GIF

So this assignment was worth 5 stars, but I think I deserve at least 6 stars for this. Not only because that’s how many I have left, but also because I hate making gifs… they’re always so tedious. Here’s the assignment: http://remix.ds106.us/remixassignments/ds106-radio-remixed-the-opposer/
I used a previous DS106 Radio assignment submission for this.
I used Photoshop and ImageReady to make the gif. I had to do some cloning and drawing of my own to fill in some of the holes. I basically just turned his previous idea into a GIF (the opposite of what the assignment was asking, kinda)

So 15 Stars? Please?

Nick Fonzarelli

So all of you who may know me are aware of the impact that the Fonz has had in my life. I may or may not have had an “ID” from pennsylvania two years ago by a guy named Nicholas James Fonzarelli who was over the age of 21. <-- Most likely a fictional story? That being said, I had to do the happy days remix. In fact I just may hold out for each one. For this assignment: 5 Sec Film Remix we were asked to basically incorperate Happy Days or the Fonz into a five sec film. I took Michael’s 5 sec film (that bastard) about me (http://michaelsinternetfunhouse.com/?p=366) and placed the best fonzarelli scene into it, completely changing up the context of the 5 sec film (not necessarily the original though) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NxGO2lx-A0
I used FCP7 to edit this
it is also 5 stars bringing me to a total of 9 stars

Here it is:

Final Project Pains

So I haven’t started blogging about my final project yet. Well It’s going great, definitely a little sketchy starting up again though. It’s a slow process. I could barely ollie when I hopped on the board last weekend. This weekend when I went up to alexandria for an interview, I decided to go skate that morning (at 8am.) Of course I manage to hurt myself in the process. So here we have my first big injury after starting skating again. It hurts to bend my wrist right now but hey time heals everything right, and if you’ve watched my cooking video, “It’s all about time.” So here we have some *EXCLUSIVE* footage from my skate video.

*Disclaimer* There is pain and vulgar language in this video

Remixed Remixed Sunset

Due to numerous people (ahem Jim Groom) calling me a cop-out for my previous remix, I decided to sit back and look long and hard at my previous creation. After a few hours of pondering, I realized I could do much better on the assignment than the effort I put in originally (about 5 minutes worth.) So I redid the assignment remix: http://remix.ds106.us/remixassignments/a-sunset-remixed-the-opposer/
I used the work submitted by another student from here: Sunset
and I used this picture: Blue Sky to remix it. I just used Photoshop to trim the picture up, do some cloning, and image color and brightness control.
NOW I am at 4 stars

Remixed Sunset

Take a picture of a beautiful sunset. Nothing fancy, just a nice picture :)
Remix Twist: The Opposer

Do the opposite of what the assignment says- this can be in terms of subject, action, almost anything to make it be 180 degrees different.

For this remix I decided to not only not take a picture of the sunset, but it shouldn’t be sunny at all. So basically it’s just a cloudy day. 4 stars here

Sautéed Perfection Stew: Cooking with Nick Antonini

The long-awaited debut is finally upon us! I did the assignment: Create a Cooking Show, Now I can’t really cook, at all. So i did my best. There was a lot of editing involved in this. I did a lot of jump cuts to not only shorten it but also to try to create humor as well. I used FCP7 for this assignment. So here it is:

Movie By Numbers

For this assignment: Movie By Numbers, I kinda interpreted it differently. I took the literal translation of the number five and showed how it is viewed throughout the world. Technically this isn’t narration right? So I used one of the few good mac screen capture freeware out there that outputs into a .mov file: Capture Me. I googled search flags and placed them into the movie and lowered the opacity and added some music… That’s about it. This one was three stars, which puts me at 26 now.

Into Zombieland- Trailer Mashup

For this assignment: Movie Trailer Mashup We were asked to select two differing movies and change the meaning of a movie to the context of another. For the assignment I chose Into the Wild and Zombieland. I figured they differed so greatly because one is focus on exploring, living life, and separating yourself from the ideas of society, while Zombieland is more focused on survival. I used FCP and audacity for this assignment. I did some minor editing to the audio at the beginning and the end and some editing to the video as well. It all fit together pretty well I’d say. This assignment was 4 stars: totaling at 23 for the week so far.

As for the grey at the beginning, it was unrendered blank screen and I didn’t notice until I uploaded to youtube. Too much other stuff to do tonight, sorry grey screen.

ds106 viral

Bed Intruder Song:
This is a classic example of a previously viral video turned into a song. It takes clips from the original video and inserts it into song. The fact that the original video was crazy/ridiculous enough may be going viral is part of the reason why this video was pushed to the top. This started the whole autotune revolutions with such greats as Double Rainbow Autotune or Annoying Orange Gets Autotuned.

Final Project

I know I’m running late on this as well, and there’s not much time left in the semester, but oh well. Ever since the end of middle school I’ve loved skating. I used to go skate when I was mad, sad, bored, or any other emotion that you could ever think of. Basically I skated all the time. When I first entered college I tried to continue this, but it slowly started to dwindle away. I was so accustomed to living so close to a couple of awesome skateparks that I couldn’t adjust to the one Fredericksburg had to offer (no offense Fburg, but it’s some shit.) It’s been almost two years since I’ve been skating (longboarding not included) so for my final project I’m going to start up again. After all, I’m moving down to florida so I better get good again before that. Here’s my ideas for this:
1. Blog every few days about my progress. Where I skated, What I did, What I learned.
2. Come up with a video montage of me skating (there won’t be too much skill involved I’m sure). Some may call this a “Skate Video” hahah
3. Talk about the skate culture around Fredericksburg and around Arlington/Alexandria. Maybe get some interviews of locals or something to include in the skate videos.

All I Need Are Some Tasty Waves, A Cool Buzz, And I’m Fine

One Archetype, Five Movies, Five Seconds
For this assignment i decided to go for the “Stoners” of movies. I figured it’d be kinda funny to put in their different laughs. I thought this would be simple, not as easy as it appears. I had to go through so many youtube clips for this. I had a few ideas for movies, definitely wanted to use my favorite movie stoner of all time Jeff Spicoli, but that didn’t work out. I ended up using the movies: Knocked up, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, Pineapple Express, and Up In Smoke. I used FCP to edit this. I realize it was 2 seconds over, but….

Donnie Darko Commentary

So after numerous attempts at formatting the my commentary video, I found the correct one! Here is the assignment: http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/video-essay/

I had a digital copy of the movie on my computer already so I loaded it into FCP and split it into several files to make it easier to find and cut clips. I used Garageband to record my commentary over the video. I’m pretty sure in this version of my commentary I took out all of the transitions so the cuts will most likely look very sloppy. I did this because the areas around the transition and cuts were appearing in strange colors when uploaded to youtube/vimeo. I probably should’ve fixed it again, but honestly…. 4 hours to write that movie? I don’t have time for that. So for any of you who are going to do this assignment: Don’t use an HD quality of the movie. It makes things complicated in youtube, so complicated.

Return to the Silent Era

This assignment was to take a modern day trailer and try to turn it into silent film trailer. I http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/return-to-the-silent-era/
I decided to use the trailer for Drive. To do this I downloaded the trailer from YouTube and loaded it into FCP7. First I desaturated the video, allowing some color. I then added a small amount of sepia to the video. FCP has this cool little effect called Bad Quality Movie. Within this effect there’s a ton of aspects that can be changed. I messed with the jitter amount and variance, scratches, hairs, dust, brightness, and a few other things. I saved a JPEG of the silent film card to my computer and used it as a template for each transition. I then found some cool music to add and time to match the music to certain cuts throughout the movie.
This assignment was 5 stars.

A Little Late

I know I’m late with these assignments, but there’s a reason for this. I’ve been having problems uploading the my video essay online. I’ve tried vimeo and youtube… no dice. It just shows up almost as if it unformatted (grey and green screens.) Right now I’m trying some other formatting that youtube is suggesting. We’ll see if that works… But in the meantime I’m posting all of my videos.

Fear The 1%

This assignment was to create a 5 second film: http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/5-second-film/
With this I tried to go for the whole Occupy Wallstreet idea. In order to avoid controversies I’ll just leave everything up to your imagination.
To make this I borrowed my roommate David. After all the filming I uploaded everything into final Cut Pro. I added a cloudy effect into the dream sequence, downloaded some sound effects from freesound.org and added a little transition.
This assignment was three stars.

Slow Down There!

This assignment was to speed up my workday. http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/speed-up-your-work-day/
In order to do this assignment i had to set up my video camera but I had one problem… I only had a 500 mb memory card. So basically I recorded 5 different video and I combined them in Final Cut Pro.
In order to do this I uploaded them all and did some cropping to try to make all the videos look the same

5 Second Film Pre-Production

So I’ve been a huge fan of 5 Second Films/ ever since a few years ago. I actually have three ideas for this and I really wanna do all of them. One idea for a five second film will be centered around the world of hipsters. I’m going to create a nightmare for hipsters. I will show a hipster falling asleep and it will transition to a dream through a cloudy state where it will have the punch line and suddenly wake the hipster up in a sweat.
My other idea will be based on emergency contacts and be titled “Celebrity Encounters”. It will start with a person filling out an emergency contact with the celebrity’s name and proceed with him shooting himself in the leg or arm or whatever (not onscreen of course) and finish off with him super excited in a doctor’s office on a gurney.
M last idea will be a group of people playing Pictionary. One team will have just guessed the right answer and will call his teammate up to go. The shot will jump to an armless man jumping up to go and then looking down and sighing.
I realize some of these are a little messed up but what the hay, that’s the foundations Family Guy was built upon.
Obviously I’ll have to find some actors and good locations for this, but I don’t want to give away toooo much.

I Can Read Movies!

One of my all time favorite movies is definitely Donnie Darko. I know this isn’t on AFI’s top 100 list, but with all due respect AFI, I’ve only seen half of those movies. Now first, I’ll state that deciding whether a movie is art is purely subjective… to a certain extent. This doesn’t mean that we can go and call Caddyshack II an artistic film, please don’t. It simply means that people can value certain qualities in a movie, whether those qualities be: script, acting, cinematography, audio, etc, and these qualities are what most stand out to the viewer.

After the first time I watched Donnie Darko, I was extremely confused. I loved the way the film was shot, I was just confused with the story. I took another few viewings to understand it.This is the first point I stress in the artistic quality of a movie. Donnie Darko has such a complex story that it actually makes you think. You don’t finish watching the movie and get on with your life, you continue thinking about it. Everything isn’t laid out within the plot. It leaves many stones unturned, making the viewer come to their own conclusions about reasoning for actions taken in the movie. So for point #1: Great Script

Piggybacking on a great script is good acting. It takes good actors to make a movie, but a good script to make good actors. This was one of Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s first major movie, aside from October Sky for Jake I think. However, Patrick Swayze?, Drew Barrymore? Seth Rogan?, not to metion the amazing role Beth Grant played as an antagonist in the movie.

Aside for the script, the thing that stood out most was the cinematography. There were A LOT of cool shots and sequences throughout this movie. Two of the ones that stood out most was the sequence where Donnie exits the school bus and goes to school, and the ending sequence where a Gary Jules cover of Mad World is played.

The way this scene was shot amazes me. It was a long take consisting of several moving shots. It was most likely filmed with a dolly but it was edited so that people or actions could be emphasized with the speed of the shot. In a few shots and a two and a half minute sequence, we can see how the whole school is made up. It really helps the characterization of different roles within the film. Pure badassery.

This scene kinda used the same techniques as the other. It tried to simulate a long take, displaying each major character and the effects the actions in the movie have had on them. It was shot and edited perfectly with the same speed and directional start-up as they pan to each character.

Now this film could be placed into so many genres. Maybe Alternate Timeline Trope, or maybe the Dying Dream Trope. It could fit into so many categories.

Daily Creates: Week 6? Maybe 7?

So I keep getting behind with the daily creates, So this is me trying to keep. Here the daily creates from week 6 or 7… maybe 8.

This daily create was to describe the origins of your name: Nick Antonini

This Daily Create was to say your name backwards. Instead of putting all the effort in to try to say it backwards.. I just said it normally and reversed it in audacity. Money

Free Advertising

So for this week I decided it was about time to actually create my own assignment. I figured “Hey, I’d like to be doing this stuff later on in life, why not give it a try first.” So I decided for this assignment you are to create an advertisement for your favorite brand of shoes. No matter the amount of time spent, any time spent in photoshop is time well spent. (<---you can use that quote if you like.)
So here you go:

Nike Tres, my favorite skate shoes ever. These things are heaven, it’s like skating on a cloud.

I’ll create a tutorial for how do to a lot of the techniques used in the picture a little later when I’m not being bombarded with midterms and work.

Sweet!… What’s mine say?

I did this 2 star design assignment tonight to finish up the week for ds106:
http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/messing-with-the-macguffin/

I was supposed to pick a screen cap from a movie and change the lines being said to alter the plot of the movie.
I know everyone’s seen this movie because it’s such a quality flick.

I know he (SPOILER ALERT) eventually finds his car at the end. But let’s just pretend that this is from the beginning of the movie. Actually I’m pretty sure it is.
Anyways, there’s a condensed version of Dude Where’s My Car.

The Truth About Napoleon Dynamite

I did the 3 star design assignment “If movie posters told the truth”
http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/if-movie-posters-told-the-truth/

I don’t know how many of you have seen Napoleon Dynamite, but if you think about it… it’s probably what started the whole hipster craze. Napoleon was the first hipster, although he’d never admit it. Just look at him, point proven.
Anyways, for this assignment I download a new font to try to match the handwritten one on the original. I also had to put some notebook paper in the background too. The concept took a lot longer than the actual work
I feel extremely shitty right now, so I’m going to seaco brunch.

Animated Movie Poster

So I don’t even know if I did this right… I made my whole poster animated. Perhaps it was because I was lazy? But my laziness turned into frustration because I’m using a Photoshop CS. Know I don’t know if you’re familiar with Photoshop… but it’s at Photoshop CS5 now.. I think. And I’m pretty sure CS is from 2003. Time to upgrade? ehhhh, nope too expensive. But anyway here’s the assignment I did
http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/animated-movie-posters/

I basically took screenshots of the movie on my computer because I DON’T have an illegal copy on my external hard drive. I uploaded the screenshots to photoshop, linked all the photos, and cropped all of them all at once. If you guys aren’t familiar with linking layers, it’s definitely a valuable thing to know. To link layers simply look on the layer toolbar, to the right of the ‘visible’ selection box on each layer is another selection box, click it and a little chain should pop up in the box. The layers are linked now.
So I took the font from another movie poster and pasted it onto each layer using said technique. I opened up Imageready CS (because my version is sooo old) and animated the layers. Just drag and drop each layer into the animation box and you’re done!

UPDATE: Fixed it! Turns out you can’t upload a GIF in a different image size than what it actually is. Otherwise it won’t play.

Alternative Book Cover

Here’s my Alternative Book Cover for “Things Fall Apart”. I remember reading this book forever ago back in high school.
http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/alternative-book-covers/
I went for the whole “political” viewpoint on this. By taking this role I’m pretending like I know all about what’s going on in Greece. So here’s my explaination:
Things are falling apart. They have been since 2010 when then hit their whole economic crisis. The Greek government started spending up the wahzoo when parts of their spending budgets were being misreported. This led them to go into crazy deep debt… higher than our relative to GDP. And now they’re screwed I guess.
There’s my in-depth explanation of what’s going on.
So I found this cover image in flickr. I did the whole color splash thing with the flag. I downloaded some new font from dafont.com
I used photoshop for everything here.

I Can Read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

I spent entirely too long on this assignment so my hand is cramped up beyond belief. Time to invest in a mouse: http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/i-can-read-movies/
I used the movie “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” for this assignment, one of my most favorite awesome movies ever. If you’ve seen this movie I’m sure you remember when Duke and Dr Gonzo are driving through “Bat Country.” Duke is hallucinating that there are bats flying around everywhere. Pretty tight shots that are seen through the reflections of his yellow tinted sunglasses.

I started with a blank canvas and painted it dark grey as the background. I made another layer and divided up the top where I would put the banner. Next I put the writing in with the text tool. I went onto the movie poster and stole some of the bats, just straight cut and paste onto individual layers of the cover. With each individual bat I adjusted the rotation and distortion. You can do this after you flatten the image but to make it easier I just edit it then in Edit > Transform. Next I put in the Fear and Loathing text. To add a little extra effects to it I went under blending options under the Layers Window to add a Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow, and a color overlay with low opacity.
I’m sure there’s tons of ways to add a little vintage effect. The way I did it was to use the paintbrush tool. I picked a airbrush style and lowered the opacity and flow. I chose to use a beige color for this. Instead of swiping the brush along the cover, I clicked a whole bunch of times to select which areas I wanted to have more stress.
Lastly I flattened the image and pasted it into a new layer. I lowered the opacity of the layer to below 20% and applied a colored pencil filter to give it a little more stressed look.
So that’s it

Weekend Movie Review

I don’t remember the last time i went to go see a movie in theaters and I actually heard people scream. This was, by far, the best horror/thriller movie of the year. I’m only saying that because it’s February and I haven’t seen any other horror movies this year.
So without giving away too much, there’s british kids in the movie… and if you haven’t seen too many horror movies, little british kids are scary as shit. Point #1 to see the movie. Point #2: You’ll feel pretty tense throughout the movie, the suspense continues instead of having one creepy jump moment and your done. I hate that. Point #3: The story isn’t the best. Why is that good? Well, because they put so much effort into making the movie scary with filming, they just thought they didn’t a great story

Plus Harry Potter is in it.

Photoshop Averaging Assignment

So I thought this assignment looked really tight, So I gave it a try and played around with it a little bit.

http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/averaging-concepts-using-flickr/

Basically you take 50 photos with similar tags and average them into one picture in photoshop. They can make some pretty slick graphics. To start I used Bulkr to download the flickr images. I used the keyword ‘happiness’ as the anchor point for the pictures. I set all the photos into a folder and opened photoshop. Go to Files>Scripts>Load Files Into Stack, and make sure to select to align them and to generate a smart object from the layers (it just saves time later on.) After that go to Layer>Smart Objects>Stack mode from here on out it’s pretty much up to you about how you want the photo to look. I used mean and median (both displayed below. Play around with it and you can get some cool results.

Here’s the two that I did using the technique stated above:

Mean

Median

Now I deviated from the instructions a little bit to see what could happen. Instead of loading all the images and creating one smart object, I simply loaded them into separate layers and adjusted the opacity of each layer. The bottom layer being at 100% and the top layer being at 2%; increasing by 2% intervals. This pretty much allowed me to choose what I wanted to be in the foreground a little more. I know that this really isn’t Averaging, but screw it, the end result was cooler anyway. It think it shows more emotion. But hey, I’m a business student, I don’t know much about art.

Splash of Color

So I was working on another assignment, but I don’t think I did it right so I did this one too.

I used photoshop to do this assignment. I created two layers of the same color image. Turned the top layer to a grayscale, and lowed the contrast and brightness a little. Next I used the background eraser to show the color of the body of the guitar. I used the the magic wand a little to select portions to erase… but it’s a little difficult to use on a black and white image with a lot of gray.
Here’s the original:

Troll Steals Axe Challenge

I didn’t see too many people do this one so I figured I’d give it a shot. Plus it’s three stars. http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/troll-steals-axe-challenge/

Basically you have to take some famous guitar player and replace their guitar with another famous guitar player’s guitar. So I took (one of) my favorite guitarist, Mark Knopfler, and replaced his guitar with the infamous fender custom strat of Stevie Ray Vaughan.

To start I opened the original picture into photoshop along with the guitar I wanted to photoshop.

I started by deleting Mark’s guitar from the picture. I used the magic wand to get rid of most of the object. I then used the lasso tools and background eraser to fine tune everything. I then had to adjust the size and rotation of the guitar and then paste it into the picture. Any opening there were, I used the clone tool to fill stuff in so there was no whitespace. I then blurred the edges of the guitar and adjusted the saturation and contrast to match the environment.
And that’s about it.

Here’s a little Knopfler fo yall

I had a lot of time on my hands last night obviously. So I did the two star album cover assignment:
http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/an-album-cover/
This assignment, like all the rest, was fun as hell.

Following the instructions I selected a random wiki article, random quote, and random flickr photo

I uploaded the photo into photoshop and based the polygonal lasso tool to split the photo into several different parts and create different layers for each part. I used the lasso tool to kinda freehand around the shadowy image to create its own layer. I then darkened the shadowy image and used the magic wand (with a very low tolerance) to select the white portions (snow) of each layer and changed the color of it with the paint bucket. I then put in my band name and album title with the text tool and voila.

De-motivational Poster

So while I was sitting home last night with a temperature of 104, I was thinking: I really hate hipsters. It’s not really that cool to think your not that cool and you don’t care. So I directed today’s assignment to hipsters.

I got this two star assignment from http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/demotivate-yourself/

Now to start out i went to flickr’s creative commons and search hipster. I’m guessing most results were pictures in Richmond (hipster central.) I ended up finding this picture I opened the picture in photoshop, did a little croppage and adjustage of the brightness/contrast, and BAM done. Now to make the actual poster I set the background to black, adjusted the canvas size to fit the words, put a couple of white and black triangles in the background to give it that matted look, and gave the poster a couple of words. Pretty easy assignment but definitely fun.

Row Fat Cat! Row!

So here we have a fat cat. Fat cat is on a boat. The original painting was Young Lady in a Boat by James Tissot. (Riveting title… I know) So I’ve renamed this new painting to Fat Cat Being Rowed in a Boat by James Tissot feat. Nick Antonini.

I got the original pictures from:
My Image
and the fat cat from
My Image

Basically to start out I went into Photoshop and open up my fat cat picture. I took the selection tool to try to erase all my unneeded background graphics. Afterwards I used the lasso tool to fine tune the erasing process to get as close to the fur as possible. For this i would recommend doing this free-hand. Don’t use the magnetic lasso, well you can, but be careful of the frequency and edge contrast if so it doesn’t look like a bunch of straight lines. After you think you’ve trimmed the picture down enough it time to put some effects on it. Take a look at the picture you paste the fat cat into. My painting was an oil on canvas so I had to try to simulate this on my fat cat.
Now back to the fat cat: Go to the filter menu on the menubar and click filter gallery. This place shows all the cool filters you can put on your image. I used a crosshatched brush stroke. (Keep in mind that you can adjust the strength and sharpness of the effect.)
After I got an effect pretty similar to the painting, I rotated the image 10 degrees CW to fit in the picture correctly. (it’s kinda just trial and error here.) Next I took out the blur tool from the toolbar, lowered the strength down to roughly 30% and blured the fur of the cat on the sides. Then I took quick strokes over the rest of the fur to blend a little better. Lastly I adjusted the brightness and contrast of the fat cat.

So now to the last part:
I opened the painting in photoshop and created a new layer… we’ll get to that in a sec. I used the polygonal lasso tool to cut out part of the image and paste it onto the new later. This is the portion where the cat kinda disappears under the plank of the boat.
Now create another new layer beneath your previous layer and paste the cat to that layer.
Position the cat to look less awkward and your good.

Bam! Done! Fat cat in a boat.

It’s Halftime America

Ultimate motivational video for the week, make that the year. People need to stop saying this is supported by the Obama Organization as well. Just embrace Clint Eastwood’s voice, especially from 1:35 on.

Web 2.0 Story

Evolution of the Web

I tried to depict Web 1.0 as an assortment of information that, while vast, is not powerful enough to control the powerful of the web. It was more so based on individual efforts, Britannica Online for example. As we moved into Web 2.0, the web become a collective effort of gathering and publishing information. It also decentralizes the internet, allowing for each user to essentially become their own server. Web 2.0 has truly harnessed the power that the internet possesses.

Butter Side Up?
The daily create was to make a picture of something upside down that is never seen that way. I drop my sandwich before doing this, and it dawned on me. Why does toast always land butter side down? You can’t even enforce the five second rule, you just get tons of dirt and crumbs stuck on the butter.

TDC 2.3

So today’s daily create was to record the sound of something that gives you comfort, or makes you feel safe. Now if Morgan Freeman doesn’t make you feel safe then I don’t know what’s wrong with you. He narrated a movie about penguins after all.

When I think safety I think only two words: Morgan Freeman

Weekend Movie Review

Since I was back home over the weekend I decided to watch some movies, a lot of movies. So here’s a review of the movies you have to see (or should never see in your life.)

The Ides of March
Two words: Ryan Gosling

Bam! Done. Go see it

Unstoppable
Pretty stupid movie. I mean it’s got Denzel Washington in it, but that’s about it. The movie is just a huge buildup that leads to nowhere. Basically there’s an out of control train in Pennsylvania with no conductor. After numerous attempts to stop it/derail, the job falls on the back of Denzel Washington.
Spoiler Alert:
They stop the train…. surprise, surprise. It’d be a pretty depressing movie if they didn’t.

Reel Steel
I love boxing, so I automatically have a bias towards this movie. However, the kicker is that they are boxing ROBOTS. Imagine The Fighter, but instead of Mark Wahlberg, you have a robot.
I’m sure everyone remembers the Rock’em Sock’em Robots toy when they were little (they had tons of variations throughout the decades.) This movie is basically based off that toy. Just a bunch of robots fighting each other. Now don’t get me wrong, that sounds like a horrible movie right? wrong. Steven Spielberg mixes in some emotion into. Plus he’s got Hugh Jackman as the lead role and Evangeline Lilly in there too. Win win.

That’s my movie review(s) of the week. Go see them (some of them.) Do it for the movie industry. Do it for yourself. Do it for Ryan Gosling

The daily create was to make a photo that freezes motion. My little :abradoodle Mya just got leg surgery and she had her first run again (so it wasn’t too hard to catch her.)

Killing Time

I’m sitting here in my operations management class learning about… something? So what better time to work on ds106. I just finished installing some plugins on my blog. I got Akismet up and running pretty easily, all I had to do was type in an ID code to activate it. I also got JetPack installed. I don’t remember how, so it must’ve been pretty easy.
Now Google Analytics was a little bit more of a pain, you have to sign up for it separately on it’s homepage. I think it’s working… I’ll check back on that later though.
I’m not even going to mess with Twitter Tools right now because, dare I say it, I have no idea how to use twitter. 80 year-old man status here I come.

I’m in the process of looking at other cool plugins I can install, but it’s difficult to type, search, and still look like I’m paying attention in class.
Here’s the link i was looking at that has a bunch of cool plugins:

The Daily Create was to record an object in motion. I wish I had a better video camera to record but eh, I was going for the Cloverfield style filming I guess.

The Daily Create was to tell the story of your keys. Mine are pretty boring… that is all. Also my girlfriend stole my keychain after I posted this. Apparently she has been to Atlanta.

Finally Up and Running

After a long week of confusion and thinking my blog was working, I can now assure you it is. Earlier last week I purchased my domain name (not the most creative, I know) from Hover and webhosting from Castironcoding. I thought it was working a few days after I bought it, but no dice. I had pointed my domain to the webhost but it still wasn’t showing up. Turns out I had to go to work on this on a different network.

So here I am, bumming at my girlfriend’s house complaining about how I don’t know how to do any of this stuff like an 80 year old man. I’ll figure it out eventually.
